NHTSA Flexes Its Muscle

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has recently stepped up its investigations of Ford, Toyota and Honda while seemingly leaving GM and Chrysler alone.

At this point, one cannot say whether this has anything to do with the federal government's new ownership stake in Chrysler and GM but it certainly begs scrutiny.

  1. There will be righteous speculation about the Feds leaving Chrysler and GM alone while pursuing actions against competitors as long as the government is in an ownership position of those companies. I believe the Government ownership of GM is about 61% while only they only own a 6% stake in Chrysler. There is already talk of GM's IPO to generate funds to pay off the government.

I am certain this will displease the Obama administration as they want to control EVERYTHING! Pressure from Limbaugh, Beck and others probably contributed to this as the administration certainly wouldn't allow the IPO without RW pressure!

In the mean time, I haven't heard much about my favorite American car company FORD, whose 15 passenger vans have killed scores of people, including the sister of one of my best friends. Check out the van angels web site:

If GM and Chrysler need scrutiny from the NTSA, I hope they pursue them as aggressively as any one else! And for the sakie of Chrysler, I hope the union does a better job running the company than unions have had in previous stints. I suspect they will be happy to sell their stock at some point and turn management of the company over to someone else. If Chrysler survives I consider it likely that it will become a part of GM at some point. The current GMAC situation is simply unsustainable for Chrysler dealers as they try to compete for GMAC resources with GM dealers. That's just not working out.
